Security poses major challenge for Bogotá mayor Galán

Bogotá's mayor, Carlos Fernando Galán, grapples with severe security issues in the city, marked by a spate of assassinations and robberies that have sparked widespread concern. Incidents including the killings of businessmen and a politician underscore vulnerability to organized crime and microtrafficking. While Galán has progressed in other areas, his handling of security is viewed as inadequate.

Under Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán's administration, Bogotá has seen grave violent incidents. In Parque de la 93, businessman Roberto Franco was shot in the back inside his building, where an armed attacker entered unimpeded. Another case involved a prominent emerald trader killed by a sniper in the eastern hills.

Additionally, politician Miguel Uribe Turbay fell victim to a hitman who shot him in the nape of the neck, in an apparent plot tied to FARC dissidents from the Segunda Marquetalia, using an illegal weapon. These crimes connect to microtrafficking networks and offenses hampered by police investigation shortcomings.

This week, journalist Ana Vélez endured the theft of her truck and belongings at gunpoint. Another event targeted a citizen and his pregnant partner, robbed by armed motorcyclists, while a truck was abandoned after a northern robbery attempt.

A ongoing debate surrounds security statistics: officials claim public perception inflates reality, shaped by media coverage, yet events indicate decline. A recent documentary on sexual exploitation and drug gangs in areas like Santa Fe highlights the ease of hiring hitmen.

Galán, in his first administrative role, has shown moderation and success in infrastructure and mobility, making unpopular but necessary decisions. However, his security approach has fallen short, exposing residents to danger. Even protected figures like Uribe faced fatal risks. "No one walks, lives, or works in peace," an analyst summarizes, warning that Galán stakes his legacy in a fear-ridden city, despite achievements like Metro progress. Structural solutions are urgently needed.
