Several feared dead in bus-lorry crash on Mombasa road

An unknown number of people died and many others were injured in a collision between a bus and a lorry on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Saturday morning. The accident happened in the Kinyambu area of Makueni County when the bus driver lost control while overtaking. Rescue efforts are underway amid traffic disruptions.

The crash occurred on November 15, 2025, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in the Kinyambu area of Makueni County. The bus, traveling from Kisumu to Mombasa via Nairobi, collided head-on with an oncoming lorry after the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle and lost control.

Witnesses described the incident as the bus ramming into the lorry, leading to extensive damage on the bus's front side, including a broken windscreen and scattered glass on the road. Videos and images circulating online showed the wreckage, with passengers trapped inside.

Preliminary reports suggest a few people may have succumbed to their injuries, though the exact number of fatalities remains unknown. Scores of others were injured. Police and local residents quickly launched a rescue operation to free those trapped.

The accident caused significant traffic snarls on the highway, forcing motorists to stop despite police efforts to clear the road.

This incident coincides with preparations for the National Transport and Safety Authority's (NTSA) annual commemorations for road crash victims, scheduled for the third Sunday of November in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County. The event's theme, 'Lost Talents,' highlights the impact of losing skilled individuals.

NTSA Head of Communication, Antony Nyongesa, stated on November 14, "This year’s theme will focus on the loss of skilled and talented individuals whose deaths have left lasting gaps in families and communities."

NTSA data from January to October 2025 records 3,890 road fatalities in Kenya, up from 3,805 the previous year. The breakdown includes 1,460 pedestrians, 351 drivers, 378 pillion passengers, 57 pedal cyclists, and 1,000 motorcyclists.
