South Warwickshire para dressage rider earns silver medal in Qatar

Sara Bates from Alcester has returned from Doha with a silver medal in the Grade IV Freestyle at the CHI Al Shaqab competition. Riding her 17-year-old home-bred mare Tango for Great Britain, she finished second behind the world number one. The achievement marks a strong start to her 2026 season despite managing multiple sclerosis.

Sara Bates, a para dressage rider from Alcester in south Warwickshire, competed in the prestigious CHI Al Shaqab event in Doha, Qatar. The three-day competition featured two straight tests followed by a Freestyle round. Bates placed fourth on the opening day and fifth on the second day before delivering a standout performance in the Freestyle, where she designed choreography to music from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

With Tango, her 17-year-old home-bred mare, Bates scored 68.792 per cent, securing second place behind Kate Shoemaker of the USA, the current FEI world number one in Grade IV. Bates described the moment: “I came out of the arena in tears. I knew it was a good test, but when it was confirmed that we’d finished second behind the world number one, it was just overwhelming. To stand on that podium representing Great Britain is something I’ll never forget.”

The result earned valuable world ranking points and strengthened her international prospects. Bates, who manages multiple sclerosis, praised the event's atmosphere: “We were looked after so well. The whole atmosphere was supportive and uplifting – exactly what para sport should be. Everyone congratulates each other and celebrates good performances. It’s competitive, but it’s also respectful.”

Now back in the UK, Bates plans to continue her 2026 season domestically while exploring further international opportunities with Tango. The Doha performance highlights her resilience and dedication to the sport.
