Southern Sweden faces continued severe water shortage

The tough water situation in southern Sweden persists according to new measurements from SGU. Low groundwater levels are reported in Skåne and other parts of Götaland.

Groundwater levels in Skåne and parts of southern Götaland remain at unusually low levels. Eva Hellstrand, groundwater expert at the Geological Survey of Sweden SGU, says the trend continues through the summer.

Some rain in June provided a slight positive effect but no trend break. Hellstrand states that reports have looked the same all spring and that heavy rain in July is needed for an abrupt change.

SGU points to deficits in Blekinge, Kronoberg and Jönköping after poor replenishment during the winters. Regardless of weather developments in the coming months, low levels are expected in southern Götaland.
