SPD foreign policy expert Adis Ahmetović urged the German government to end its opposition to sanctions against Israel. “Germany must clear the way for a unified European stance,” he told the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland.
Ahmetović said Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul need not take a leadership role. Yet on obvious violations of international law by Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government, the German position could not be the veto. The benchmark of foreign policy must instead be law and rules.
EU foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Brussels on Monday. They plan to discuss possible sanctions over continued Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, among other topics. Germany has so far been strictly against such a step. More than 20 EU states support an import ban on products from illegal settlements.
