The Pittsburgh Steelers could turn to the waiver wire on August 30 to bolster their safety position. Insider Mike DeFabo highlighted the issue as a potential vulnerability heading into the season.
The Athletic's Mike DeFabo stated that safety depth is a concern for the team. He noted it would not be surprising to see the Steelers add a true free safety from the waiver wire on cutdown day.
Pittsburgh traded Minkah Fitzpatrick last season and signed Juan Thornhill to fill the role, but Thornhill was released before the regular season ended. The defense then relied on players better suited near the line of scrimmage.
Recent addition Darnell Savage offers free safety experience, yet he faces competition for a roster spot. A seventh-round rookie with speed is also on the roster but unlikely to take on a major role early.
Roster cutdowns are set for August 30 after the final preseason game, when 1,184 players could become available through waivers.
