Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has stated that Max Verstappen absolutely regrets not joining Mercedes when the opportunity arose. Steiner made the comments during an appearance on The Red Flags Podcast.
Steiner explained that Verstappen missed his chance during contract talks involving George Russell and Mercedes. He noted that Verstappen was uncertain about the future at the time and could not exit his existing deal.
The four-time champion remains with Red Bull, where recent mechanical issues, including a rear wing failure at the British Grand Prix, have caused frustration. Steiner added that the window has now closed.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed plans to retain Russell and Kimi Antonelli for 2027. Steiner concluded that Verstappen waited for new regulations and the moment passed.
