STF sets 60-day deadline for Big Techs to remove illegal content

The Supreme Federal Court on Thursday (11) set a 60-day transition period for digital platforms to adopt measures to remove illegal content.

The deadline was set during the judgment of appeals against the June 2025 decision on the Marco Civil da Internet. The court required Big Techs to remove posts with antidemocratic content, terrorism, incitement to racism, and inducement to suicide.

The proposal came from rapporteur Dias Toffoli, who deemed the time reasonable for compliance. The thesis conclusion will be formalized next week by president Edson Fachin, with proclamation scheduled for June 17.

Companies had requested at least six months. Ministers such as Flávio Dino defended preserving the thesis approved unanimously, while André Mendonça warned of risks of censorship to freedom of expression.
