Preliminary research presented this week suggests bacteria from gum disease may contribute to calcific aortic valve stenosis, a serious heart condition. The findings were shared at a major cardiovascular science meeting in Boston.
Researchers identified Porphyromonas gingivalis in heart valve tissue from patients with the condition. The bacterium was far more abundant in calcified valves than in other valve samples.
In mouse experiments, repeated exposure to the live bacteria led to valve calcification and symptoms of aortic stenosis. Preventive antibiotics reduced these effects, as did blocking the IL-1 beta inflammatory pathway.
Chenyang Li, a co-lead author from Fuwai Hospital in Beijing, said the results point to a possible new avenue for prevention. "There are currently no medications proven to prevent or slow the progression of CAVS," Li noted.
Eduardo Sanchez of the American Heart Association said the work adds to evidence connecting oral health and heart health. The study remains early and awaits confirmation in human trials.
