The Nightingale adaptation starts filming in Budapest ahead of 2027 release

TriStar Pictures' film version of Kristin Hannah's WWII novel The Nightingale has begun production in Budapest, with sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning starring as leads Vianne and Isabelle. A February 12, 2027 theatrical release is now confirmed, following years of delays.

Filming commenced late March 2026, as announced by author Kristin Hannah. Elle Fanning referenced the start during SXSW Film Festival 2026 press (echoing her recent discussion of the project), with Dakota Fanning confirming the timeline. Hello Sunshine president Lauren Neustadter spoke from the Budapest set, per Deadline.

Acquired by TriStar in 2015, the project faced script/director changes and COVID-19 delays, missing a 2020 target. Director Mélanie Laurent exited; Michael Morris now helms Dana Stevens' script. Producers include Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter (Hello Sunshine), Elizabeth Cantillon, and the Fannings (Lewellen Pictures).

Recent cast additions (per Deadline): Edmund Donovan (January 2026), Mark Rylance, Shira Haas, Albrecht Schuch, Douglas Hodge, Gwilym Lee, and Vinette Robinson join the Fanning sisters in this tale of French resistance to Nazi occupation.
