President Bola Tinubu signed the National Identity Management Commission Act 2026 into law on Friday, strengthening Nigeria’s identity system and security measures.
The signing took place at the State House in Abuja. Key officials including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo attended the ceremony.
Tunji-Ojo highlighted recent security gains from the integrated database. Seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders were arrested last week at Katsina Airport upon return from Hajj.
"We inherited a fractured system. But I’m happy to tell you that even last week, seven known commanders of Boko Haram and ISWAP... were arrested at Katsina Airport," Tunji-Ojo said.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote also spoke, noting the law modernises identity management and supports digital services.
