President Trump warned he would strike Iran harder if its proxies in Lebanon continue causing trouble. Vice President JD Vance met Iranian officials and other mediators in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss a fragile memorandum of understanding signed last week.
Trump posted on social media that Iran must stop its proxies in Lebanon or face stronger attacks than those carried out last week. He also criticized Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and warned against closing the Strait of Hormuz.
Vance, who arrived in Switzerland on Sunday morning, described progress in the talks and said the United States was open to transforming relations if Iran ends its nuclear ambitions and regional interference. He met with Pakistan's prime minister and other participants including Qatari mediators and the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stated that Iran's armed forces are ready to respond to threats. The talks also addressed enforcement of a ceasefire in southern Lebanon and clarification of Iran's position on the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping continued normally according to U.S. Central Command.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would maintain a security zone in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is dismantled. A senior U.S. diplomat said negotiations could continue through the night despite earlier reports from Iranian state media that the talks had broken down.
