The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced plans to introduce Chinese language as a new subject in all schools across Kenya. The high-level engagement occurred on Friday at TSC headquarters in Nairobi, led by Commission Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei.
"The Commission today hosted a high-level engagement on the implementation of Chinese language education in Kenya," TSC announced. Attendees included Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Muganda Inyangala and Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, Wang Shangxue.
Officials stressed TSC's readiness to collaborate with relevant government agencies and education institutions for a structured rollout. Teachers will require specialised training to deliver the subject effectively.
The government expects to pilot the programme in selected schools before a nationwide implementation. The move aligns with Kenya's strengthening economic ties with China and demand for multilingual skills in sectors such as trade, tourism, technology, and diplomacy.
