Two arrested in Gurugram fake Mounjaro injections racket

Authorities in Gurugram busted a racket manufacturing and selling fake Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injections from a residential flat, arresting two men. A nationwide alert has been issued to detect the counterfeit drugs. Drug Control Officer Amandeep Chauhan detailed the ongoing investigation.

A Health Department team raided a residential society in Gurugram's Sector 62 on Monday, arresting two people including key accused Avi Sharma. Mujjamil, a deliveryman from DLF Phase 4 and originally from Uttar Pradesh, was also taken into custody.

The accused imported raw drugs from China and manufactured counterfeit Mounjaro injections by mixing them with water in the flat. Packaging, barcode affixing, and labelling were done there, with packaging machines recovered. Drug Control Officer Amandeep Chauhan said Saturday's recovery from a vehicle in DLF Phase 4 involved injections worth ₹70 lakh.

The illegal injections were supplied through the B2B portal Indiamart, Chauhan alleged. "We received information about a fake injection chain operating in Gurugram and acted on it," Chauhan said. An investigation into the entire network is underway.

Mounjaro is a weekly injectable medication for type 2 diabetes that improves blood sugar control and aids weight loss. Experts warn such counterfeit injections can cause serious health problems. A nationwide alert with batch numbers has been issued.

A new study from the University of Gothenburg shows that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in the diabetes and weight loss drug Mounjaro, reduces alcohol intake and relapse-like behaviors in rats and mice. This builds on prior research on semaglutide in Ozempic and Wegovy, which curbs alcohol consumption in humans. Researchers hope for similar effects in patients with alcohol dependence.
