Parents agreed to a phased reopening of Utumishi Girls Academy following an eight-hour meeting with Ministry of Education officials on June 29. The principal has been placed on compulsory leave as part of reforms after a May fire killed 16 students.
The school will reopen in phases, with Form Four students reporting on July 2 and other learners on July 6. Students will use dormitories unaffected by the fire while the National Police Service constructs temporary structures. The school will also expand its dining hall and convert two classrooms into temporary dormitories.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had earlier dissolved the school's Board of Management for failing to comply with safety regulations. Some parents expressed criticism over the pace of infrastructure support, giving the government until August to act.
Separately, the Kibera High Court ordered mental assessments for eight students charged with murder in connection with the fire. The students appeared virtually before Deputy Registrar Barbara Akinyi after the case was transferred from Naivasha.
