Unrest has hit several schools nationwide since April, causing damage, injuries and deaths.
A deadly fire occurred on March 28, 2026, at Utumishi Girls High School in Gilgil, killing 16 students and injuring 79 others. More than 18 boarding schools have been affected in counties including Nakuru, Murang’a, Embu, Kisii, Siaya, Makueni and the Coast region. The Ministry of Education said the incidents stem from exam fears, stress and complaints over services. Secretary Professor Julius Bitok said a national inspection was ordered within two weeks and quality assurance officers increased to 1,000. Parent Association chairman Silas Obuhatsa called the situation a national emergency rather than isolated events. He urged full implementation of school safety policies.
