The Chicago White Sox executed an unusual two-out play during a 9-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Monday.
With one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the third inning, Kody Clemens hit a ground ball to first baseman Jacob Gonzalez. Gonzalez threw to shortstop Colson Montgomery at second base to retire the lead runner. The return throw sailed high over Gonzalez's head. Gonzalez retrieved the ball and threw again toward second as Clemens attempted to advance. Montgomery applied the tag on the two-hopper to complete the play. The play does not count as a double play in the record books because the batter reached base safely. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marks the first such occurrence since the St. Louis Cardinals achieved it against the Montreal Expos on June 26, 1972.
