A 44-year-old woman allegedly kidnapped an 18-year-old man with autism in Charlotte, North Carolina, and drove him around the city for about 40 minutes in his Mini Cooper before police intervened.
Amanda Gills faces charges of second-degree kidnapping, larceny of a motor vehicle and fleeing and eluding arrest in the June 25 incident.
The event began around 6:20 p.m. at a Circle K gas station on Tyvola Road, where victim Griffin Haire had stopped on his way home. Dashcam footage captured Gills ordering him into the car and claiming to be his designated driver.
Haire contacted his family during the ride, allowing police to track the vehicle. He jumped out when Gills slowed down, after which officers performed a felony traffic stop.
Gills, who remains in Mecklenburg County Jail without bond, is scheduled to appear in court on July 17. The victim's father described the ordeal as one of their worst fears realized.
