A youth baseball coach was shot and killed outside a barbershop in Birmingham, Alabama, in front of his wife and children. The suspect, who knew the victim, was arrested shortly after the incident on Saturday.
Jorge Fonseca, a coach with the Wow Factor 205 youth baseball organization, was killed in the shooting at a strip mall barbershop located at 260 West Valley Avenue.
Magdaleno Mendoza Jr., 36, has been charged with provocation manslaughter. Birmingham police said the two men argued and the confrontation turned physical before Mendoza fired the fatal shots. He fled the scene but was taken into custody about 15 minutes later.
Fonseca's wife and four children were inside the barbershop when the shooting occurred. A statement from the baseball organization described Fonseca as a devoted husband, father and mentor who taught values beyond the game.
Local resident Troy Whetstone, whose son played on a team coached by Fonseca, told WBRC that the news hit the traveling baseball community hard. He noted that many children, including his own son, viewed Fonseca as a second father figure.
