Cody Ponce exits Blue Jays debut with knee injury

Cody Ponce departed his Toronto Blue Jays debut on a medical cart Monday night at Rogers Centre after suffering right knee discomfort. The injury happened in the third inning while fielding a ground ball against the Colorado Rockies. The Blue Jays announced the initial diagnosis, with more details expected after tests.

Ponce was running toward first base to field a ground ball hit by Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy in the third inning. He bobbled his first touch on the ball, then twisted to recover it. As he reached down, Ponce grabbed the back of his right leg in pain and collapsed on the infield dirt. The Blue Jays medical staff rushed out, joined by manager John Schneider. A cart soon arrived to help Ponce off the field, where he remained in visible discomfort as staff assisted him. This marked Ponce's first Major League appearance since 2021. He had spent three seasons in Japan and one in Korea, rebuilding his career as a pitcher. In 2025, Ponce excelled in the KBO with a 1.89 ERA and 252 strikeouts over 180 2/3 innings, securing a three-year, $30 million contract with Toronto.
