Hong Kong issues first cold weather warning as temperature falls to 12 degrees

Hong Kong's forecaster issued its first cold weather warning of the season on New Year's Day, with urban temperatures expected to drop to a low of 12 degrees Celsius on Friday. A cold front moving across Guangdong's coastal areas will bring cooler weather to the city in the coming days. Temperatures in the New Territories could be a couple of degrees lower, with cold conditions persisting into Saturday morning.

Hong Kong's Observatory issued the first cold weather warning of the season at 4.20pm on Thursday, coinciding with New Year's Day. The alert comes as a cold front sweeps across the coastal areas of Guangdong, set to usher in cooler weather for the city over the next few days.

Urban areas are forecast to see minimum temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 Fahrenheit) on Friday, with the New Territories potentially dipping a couple of degrees lower. The day will be dry, reaching a high of about 17 degrees, and cold conditions will linger into Saturday morning.

"With the monsoon moderating slightly early next week, temperatures will rise slightly over the region but it will still be cool in the morning," the Observatory said, noting that fine and dry weather is expected to persist into early next week.

It also reminded residents to ensure heaters are safe before use and to keep them away from combustibles.
