La KTA proteste contre l'arrestation de chefs de chauffeurs kenyans en Ouganda alors qu'une grève frappe des frontières clés

La Kenya Transporters Association a condamné la détention signalée de chefs de chauffeurs kenyans par les autorités ougandaises. Ces arrestations font suite au rôle joué par ces leaders dans la résolution d'une impasse entre l'Ouganda et le Soudan du Sud concernant le transport routier. Les chauffeurs ont entamé une grève aux frontières de Malaba et de Busia, perturbant le mouvement des marchandises.

Les autorités ougandaises auraient arrêté les chefs des chauffeurs kenyans peu après qu'ils aient aidé à négocier un accord le samedi 9 mai. Les négociations portaient sur l'arrestation et le harcèlement des chauffeurs de camion au Soudan du Sud et ont abouti à la signature du « Record of Resolutions on Trade Facilitation and Highway Security ».

La Kenya Transporters Association a qualifié ces détentions d'injustes. Dans une déclaration publiée le dimanche 10 mai, le groupe a affirmé que les dirigeants avaient agi de bonne foi pour garantir une solution pacifique.

Les chauffeurs ont entamé une grève aux points de passage de Malaba et de Busia. Ces points servent de principales passerelles pour les marchandises voyageant depuis le port de Mombasa vers l'Ouganda, le Rwanda, la République démocratique du Congo et le Soudan du Sud.

L'association a appelé les autorités de sécurité ougandaises à libérer immédiatement les dirigeants détenus, à garantir leur sécurité et à organiser leur retour au Kenya.
