The Seattle Mariners will return to a piggyback pitching strategy for their Saturday game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Logan Gilbert is scheduled to start, with Emerson Hancock following in relief. The approach comes after a one-week break from the tactic.
The club will also start Luis Castillo on Friday and George Kirby on Sunday to complete the series. Manager Dan Wilson confirmed the plan before Thursday’s game.
The Gilbert and Hancock tandem was originally planned for the previous weekend in Cleveland but was adjusted at the last minute. Wilson noted the setup allows flexibility and extra rest for the staff.
The Mariners expect to use the piggyback method one more time before the All-Star break, possibly pairing George Kirby and Bryan Woo on July 12 in St. Petersburg. Wilson said decisions will depend on how the schedule unfolds.
This marks the fifth time the team has employed the strategy this season, which aims to manage workloads and support the bullpen.
