Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies and Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays will start Tuesday night’s All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park.
The National League selected Sánchez to start for the host Phillies, while the American League chose Cease. Sánchez, a second-time All-Star, will make his first start in the Midsummer Classic after pitching in relief last year. Cease earns his first All-Star nod.
Both pitchers rank among the top in several categories entering the break. Sánchez leads National League pitchers in WAR and ranks third in strikeouts with 144. Cease ranks second in strikeouts with 148 and holds a 2.56 ERA.
Philadelphia’s last pitcher to start the All-Star Game was Roy Halladay in 2011. Halladay also started for Toronto in 2009. NL manager Dave Roberts said of Sánchez, "I think he deserves it. He's the hometown ball player."
The game is set for July 14 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
