Mother shot in legs while retrieving daughter's stolen Hyundai

A mother in Memphis, Tennessee, was shot in both legs after attempting to recover her daughter's stolen 2011 Hyundai Sonata from a shopping center parking lot. Authorities charged 23-year-old Marquis Byers with aggravated assault in connection with the incident.

On Wednesday, the mother was driving near the Charlestowne Shops shopping center on Mount Moriah Road Extension in Memphis when she spotted her daughter's stolen 2011 Hyundai Sonata in the parking lot. According to court documents, she parked her own vehicle to block the Sonata from leaving and then entered the car, closing the door. As she looked down to open the hood, she heard gunshots and realized she had been shot in both legs. She looked up to see two men entering a black BMW. The mother called 911, and responding Memphis police officers applied tourniquets to her legs to control the bleeding before she was transported to a hospital in non-critical condition. Surveillance footage showed a man in black clothing, identified as Marquis Byers, exiting the BMW, approaching the Sonata's driver's door, and firing several shots at the mother. A woman then exited the BMW and confronted Byers. Another man picked up the gun that Byers had dropped, and the two men fled the scene, leaving the woman behind to assist the victim. The BMW was linked to Byers and two associates, who were not charged as of Thursday. Byers, 23, was arrested and booked into Shelby County Jail, where he is held on a $125,000 bond. He appeared in court this week, with his next appearance date unclear.
