New C100 president Paul Cheung plans to bridge US-China tensions

Paul Cheung was recently named president of the Committee of 100 (C100), a non-profit of influential Chinese-Americans promoting bilateral US-China exchanges across fronts. Amid heightened tensions, he aims to highlight narratives helping both countries grasp the relationship's broad impact on citizens and the world.

The Committee of 100 (C100) is a non-profit organization of influential Chinese-Americans that promotes bilateral exchanges between China and the United States across all fronts. Paul Cheung was recently named its president, holding high hopes for Chinese-Americans' relationship with China amid uncertain times.

In an interview, Cheung was asked about his strategy as C100 president to maintain a neutral US-China connection during heightened tensions. He stated: "China and the US need, require, an intermediary. At the Committee of 100’s founding, that made a lot of sense, but fast-forward to today, both China and the US don’t need an intermediary, per se, in terms of government."

He noted: "This is an interesting time for us, and our role is to really highlight these narratives and help both countries understand that. The problem is, the relationship between the US and China is no longer just government to government. Its impact on citizens and the world is great. People in Europe, in Africa and Latin America, a lot of them don’t know what to do."

Cheung's vision centers on the relationship's effects beyond official channels, emphasizing a global perspective on US-China interactions. The organization, founded in 1990, seeks to foster understanding and cooperation, particularly amid current geopolitical challenges.
