Seven injured after tree falls during soccer match in central Japan

Seven people were taken to hospital after a 20-meter tree fell onto a sports ground in Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture, during a soccer tournament for elementary school children on Sunday.

Local authorities said two preschool girls suffered slight injuries while five women aged in their 30s to 40s had injuries ranging from minor to serious. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Police received an emergency call at around 12:05 p.m. after the tree fell. The seven injured appeared to be parents and children watching a match. A witness reported hearing a cracking sound before the tree came down.

The soccer tournament for elementary school children had been held over two days from Saturday. Rain fell in Gotemba on Saturday night but none was recorded on Sunday. The sports ground forms part of a resort complex that includes a hotel, hot spring facilities and tennis courts.
