Sweden Democrats politician resigns after Expo exposé

Barbara Åberg, a Sweden Democrats politician in Skurup, resigns from her municipal roles following Expo's revelation of her sharing conspiracy theories and anti-vaccine views on social media. She has posted pro-Russian content and criticized support for Ukraine. The party's group leader confirms that her opinions do not align with the party's stance.

Barbara Åberg recently served on Skurup's municipal council and as a substitute on the municipal board. Following Expo's investigation published on Friday, which exposed her social media activity, Sweden Democrats group leader Lars Nyström announced that she is resigning from all her roles.

Åberg was active in the Facebook group 'Ryssland är våra vänner' and posted, among other things: 'Sjukt trött på Ukrainas proxykrig och Europas krigshets mot Ryssland. Skäms att vara svensk' (Extremely tired of Ukraine's proxy war and Europe's war-mongering against Russia. Ashamed to be Swedish). She also claimed that Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj was installed by a gangster and that the country was sold to NATO and the US since 2014. According to Expo, she portrayed Russia as threatened while depicting Europe, the US, and 'globalists' as the aggressors. Åberg shared posts from Swebbtv, which disseminates Russian state propaganda and conspiracy theories, and expressed opposition to vaccines.

Nyström wrote in an email to SVT: 'The expressed opinions do not align with the party's views but are the individual's own thoughts and reflections. After dialogue, the person in question has now notified that she is resigning from all her municipal assignments.' Expo's reporting highlights how Åberg's posts do not match the Sweden Democrats' official positions.
