La jeune star philippine de l'athlétisme Mark Dave Nicolas est décédée à l'âge de 18 ans

Mark Dave Nicolas, un athlète de 18 ans originaire d'Ilocos Norte qui avait établi un record national lors des Palarong Pambansa 2025, est décédé le 29 avril dans un hôpital de Batac.

L'étudiant de l'université Adamson avait montré des promesses précoces sous la direction de l'ancien gouverneur d'Ilocos Norte, Michael Keon. Il avait remporté l'or au 800 mètres masculin lors des Palarong Pambansa 2025 avec un temps de 1:53.20, établissant un nouveau record national. Il a par la suite décroché l'argent lors des 14èmes ASEAN School Games à Brunei.

Nicolas avait été admis au centre hospitalier Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center après avoir ressenti des douleurs croissantes, initialement dues à ce qu'il pensait être un petit furoncle sur la jambe. Il y est décédé le 29 avril. L'hôpital n'a pas communiqué de cause officielle du décès.

Sa disparition laisse la province dans l'attente de réponses concernant la perte soudaine d'un athlète prometteur, autrefois considéré comme un successeur potentiel du nageur olympique Teofilo Yldefonso.
