Adrian Newey details Aston Martin structural issues in 2026

Adrian Newey has outlined key organizational and technical shortcomings that have hampered Aston Martin's 2026 Formula 1 season. The team has struggled with reliability, an overweight chassis and insufficient downforce. Newey spoke to the Aston Martin website about these challenges.

Newey said the team's development started late and its tools and processes were outdated. He noted that parts of the systems dated back to the Jordan era and were no longer suitable.

The car has been significantly overweight partly due to power unit integration issues with Honda. Aerodynamic choices made under time pressure have also created unexpected problems.

Aston Martin plans to introduce a revised car at the Hungarian Grand Prix next month. The team is increasing in-house production and investing in better simulation tools, though Newey said visible gains from these changes will come later in the year.

Aston Martin occupies the last position in the constructors' standings with zero points after the first three rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The team has faced severe reliability problems, including intense vibrations, limiting its track time. Pundits Jolyon Palmer and Alex Jacques offered critical evaluations, while praising Fernando Alonso's race starts.

Adrian Newey believes a major car upgrade planned for the Hungarian Grand Prix could persuade Fernando Alonso to continue racing in Formula 1 through 2027.
