Akbayan calls Tarriela's promotion a slap to China

The Akbayan Party congratulated Philippine Coast Guard's Jay Tarriela on his promotion to rear admiral, describing it as a 'slap in the face' to China over his firm defense of the West Philippine Sea.

On Sunday, the Akbayan Party issued a statement congratulating Commodore Jay Tarriela, the Philippine Coast Guard's spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, on his elevation to rear admiral. Akbayan president Rafaela David, also a co-convenor of the Atin Ito coalition, described the promotion as a significant victory for supporters of the West Philippine Sea and a strong rebuke to China and its Manila embassy, which have repeatedly targeted Tarriela for his outspoken defense of Philippine sovereignty.

David noted that Tarriela has consistently shared factual updates on West Philippine Sea developments with the public and international community, resisting disinformation and external pressures. 'When confronted by public attacks from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Philippines, he did not retreat—asserting our rights under international law and standing firmly by his duty to inform,' she stated.

The promotion was announced in a February 23 letter from Executive Secretary Ralph Recto to Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, as the PCG falls under the Department of Transportation. It occurred amid tensions sparked by Tarriela's comments on Chinese incursions in Philippine waters, including his January 14 presentation at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde featuring AI-generated caricatures of Chinese President Xi Jinping, which prompted a formal protest from the Chinese Embassy and escalated into a verbal exchange involving senators and House members. Malacañang urged both sides to foster mutual respect.

Philippine Coast Guard Commodore Jay Tarriela responded to the Chinese Embassy in Manila's diplomatic protest against his statements, calling it an attempt to divert attention from China's aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea. The protest stemmed from a presentation he made featuring satirical images of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Malacañang and the Department of Foreign Affairs have yet to respond.

China summoned the Philippine ambassador in Beijing on January 22, 2026, to protest remarks by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela on the West Philippine Sea. The Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded that Manila swiftly "undo the negative impact" of these statements. Tarriela responded that threats would not intimidate them and transparency would continue.

In a rare show of compassion, Chinese navy members assisted a distressed Filipino fisherman in the West Philippine Sea on Christmas Day. They provided bottled water and food to the man who had written a 'help me' sign on his small boat. While the fisherman expressed thanks, the Philippine Coast Guard questioned the Chinese vessel's presence in the area.

A Senate debate heated up on Monday, February 3, as Sen. Francis Pangilinan and Sen. Rodante Marcoleta clashed over the legal basis of the Philippines' claim in the West Philippine Sea. Marcoleta questioned the validity of the 2016 arbitral ruling, while Pangilinan defended it as clearly favoring the country.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the Philippine Coast Guard to inspect dredgers in Manila Bay following a report on a vessel changing identities. Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson has proposed a formal sit-down meeting between senators and Chinese embassy officials to de-escalate the heated rhetoric over the West Philippine Sea. This follows the Chinese ambassador's call to talk. The aim is to foster civilized discourse rather than public debates.
