High demand has saturated the appointment system for obtaining a permanent driver's license in Mexico City, with the deadline set for December 31, 2025. Users report difficulties scheduling at Semovi modules, but an alternative exists at treasury kiosks. Authorities have extended hours to handle the increased requests.
The permanent type A driver's license initiative, launched nearly a year ago by the Mexico City Government, has drawn a massive response. Hundreds of people are seeking to complete the process before the December 31, 2025 deadline, leading to exhausted appointments at the 35 Semovi modules. By early November, availability showed as 'red,' meaning no slots were open.
A resident voiced frustration on social media: “I've been trying for days to book an appointment for a type A permanent license, and all days and module options are red. Customer service tells me to keep trying and that nothing else can be done, as they only serve by appointment.”
Faced with the shortage, the recommended alternative is to visit treasury kiosks directly, without booking. However, long lines form, with waits ranging from minutes to hours due to the high volume of applicants.
Requirements include: official ID, proof of address, a type A license issued by Semovi or proof of knowledge exam, and a paid payment slip for 1,500 pesos. Both treasury and Semovi offices now operate from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada stated that an evaluation is underway to possibly extend the period, based on its impact on revenue collection and demand. As of now, there is no confirmation of an extension beyond December 31, 2025.
