Archaeology students excavate Uppsala's Engelska parken

Archaeology students at Uppsala University have begun excavating Engelska parken to uncover remnants of past generations' student life. The project focuses on the last 150 years, seeking traces of chemistry experiments, political manifestations, and parties. Finds are displayed daily to the public.

Uppsala University has launched a project where archaeology students are excavating Engelska parken. The aim is to find material traces from student life activities over the last 150 years, including bottle caps, shards from drinking glasses, and signs of political manifestations.

"We are looking for the material cultures of student life", says Joakim Wehlin, university lecturer in archaeology and project leader. He also mentions possibilities of chemistry experiments and festive antics.

Curious Uppsala residents can visit the excavations every day at ten o'clock to see finds and hear about them. A pop-up museum is planned in the park in 2027. In a video clip, student Johanna Zettermark Hillesjö sets the spade into the ground.
