Asteroid Named After Elliott Smith by Astronomical Union

An asteroid discovered in 2014 has been officially named after the late musician Elliott Smith. The naming was approved by the International Astronomical Union’s Working Group for Small Body Nomenclature.

The minor planet now carries the designation “(861969) Elliottsmith.” The tribute marks the first such honor for Smith more than two decades after his death in 2003.

Edinburgh-based filmmaker Orlando Campopiano proposed the name after listening to Smith’s posthumous track “Shooting Star.” He contacted the musician’s estate, and the proposal received formal approval.

Campopiano said the asteroid offers “a permanent legacy in the stars” and expressed hope that it will introduce new listeners to Smith’s music. The number in the designation references the artist’s birth on August 6, 1969.

The asteroid can be tracked through NASA’s Small-Body Database. It joins a list of celestial bodies named after other musicians including David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, and the members of The Beatles.

NASA's Artemis II crew became the first humans in over 50 years to loop around the moon's far side on April 6, traveling farther from Earth than any before them. The astronauts captured unprecedented views, including close-ups of craters and a unique solar eclipse. They are now heading back for a splashdown off California on April 10.

PJ Harvey has released her first new song in three years. Titled 'Voyager,' the track was written in the voice of NASA's Voyager 2 probe.

An asteroid designated 2026JH2 will fly past Earth at a distance of 90,917 kilometres on 18 May. The object measures between 16 and 36 metres across and carries enough mass to damage a city if it struck, though experts confirm no impact risk for at least a century.

Modest Mouse has released its first album since 2021. Frontman Isaac Brock discussed the record and the death of founding drummer Jeremiah Green in a recent interview.
