Carolina Monroy del Mazo, cousin of former president Enrique Peña Nieto, quit the PRI on April 14 and joined Somos México, a group seeking registration as a political party for the 2027 elections. In a press conference, she said there is no place for her in the current PRI. Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo, leader of Somos México, announced mobilizations against a possible TEPJF rejection of their registration.

Carolina Monroy del Mazo, with a long career in the PRI and the State of Mexico government, quit the party on April 14, 2026. Cousin of former president Enrique Peña Nieto, she held positions such as secretary of Economic Development of the State of Mexico from 2009 to 2011 during Peña Nieto's governorship, and mayor of Metepec from 2013 to 2015. She was also a federal deputy for the PRI until 2018 and held national party leadership roles, including general secretary in 2016.

She thanked the PRI for opportunities but said the party has changed.

Somos México, registered as the civil association Personas Sumando in 2025, needs to accredit 256,030 affiliates for INE registration, with a deadline of June 25. If approved, it would become a party from July 1 and could participate in 2027.

Initial reactions on X to Carolina Monroy del Mazo's resignation from PRI to join Somos México are largely skeptical and negative, portraying the move as political recycling of PRI old guard and Atlacomulco group figures seeking to regain influence. Users mock Somos México as 'cascajo' (scraps) and parasites eyeing public funds, with pro-Morena accounts dominant in criticism. Journalists and news outlets report neutrally on PRI's internal fractures and opposition shifts ahead of 2027 elections, noting limited positive or supportive sentiments.

On its 97th anniversary, PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas called on PAN and Movimiento Ciudadano to form an opposition alliance to counter Morena in the 2027 elections. The appeal aims to unite forces to defend democratic institutions and balance political power. Meanwhile, debate over President Claudia Sheinbaum's electoral reform creates divisions among allied and opposition parties.

The political party Somos México presented the 100 members of its Citizen Advisory Council on Saturday, February 21, during its Constitutive National Assembly. This body will evaluate the party's actions after receiving recognition from the National Electoral Institute. Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo was elected as the party leader, with Cecilia Soto taking on the role of secretary general.

PRI's former senator Beatriz Paredes Rangel denied a fake image spread on social media portraying her as the PRI's presidential candidate for 2030. She clarified that the message does not come from her official accounts. The denial comes days after the PRI announced aspirants for 2027 gubernatorial races.

Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, mayor of Monterrey, has expressed interest in running for governor of Nuevo León or Sonora in the 2027 elections, though he has not yet decided which. Movimiento Ciudadano leader Jorge Álvarez Máynez has offered him full support for either candidacy. The choice will consider internal party factors during a pivotal national moment.

Uruapan's mayor, Grecia Quiroz García, has denounced an alleged attempt at a political trial to remove her from office, three and a half months after her husband Carlos Manzo's assassination. In a social media post, she claimed they seek to silence her voice and the Hat Movement. So far, no formal procedure has been initiated in the Michoacán Congress.

Ricardo Monreal, Morena's coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, announced that the electoral reform pushed by President Claudia Sheinbaum will reach Congress before the end of February, without eliminating proportional representation deputies. Instead, the current scheme of 300 deputies by relative majority and 200 by proportional representation will be maintained, with changes in their selection to link them more closely to society. Luisa María Alcalde, Morena's national leader, emphasized that there will be no more meritless proportional legislators and new democratic mechanisms will be designed.

Morena leaders, including Luisa María Alcalde and Guillermo Rafael Santiago, have denied speculations about preserving the current plurinominal system in the electoral reform, stating changes will strengthen representativeness and cut costs. Negotiations continue at the Secretaría de Gobernación, with allies PT and PVEM. Ricardo Monreal corrected his initial claim that the issue was settled.
