Carolina Monroy del Mazo, cousin of former president Enrique Peña Nieto, quit the PRI on April 14 and joined Somos México, a group seeking registration as a political party for the 2027 elections. In a press conference, she said there is no place for her in the current PRI. Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo, leader of Somos México, announced mobilizations against a possible TEPJF rejection of their registration.
Carolina Monroy del Mazo, with a long career in the PRI and the State of Mexico government, quit the party on April 14, 2026. Cousin of former president Enrique Peña Nieto, she held positions such as secretary of Economic Development of the State of Mexico from 2009 to 2011 during Peña Nieto's governorship, and mayor of Metepec from 2013 to 2015. She was also a federal deputy for the PRI until 2018 and held national party leadership roles, including general secretary in 2016.
She thanked the PRI for opportunities but said the party has changed.
Somos México, registered as the civil association Personas Sumando in 2025, needs to accredit 256,030 affiliates for INE registration, with a deadline of June 25. If approved, it would become a party from July 1 and could participate in 2027.
