Coco Gauff voices disappointment over umpire gender remark

Coco Gauff shared her reaction to a sexist comment made by Paraguayan player Daniel Vallejo toward chair umpire Ana Carvalho during the French Open. The American player expressed her views while preparing for her opening match at the Berlin Tennis Open.

Gauff stated that an umpire’s job does not depend on gender. “I was disappointed when I heard that,” she said.

Vallejo received a fine of 65,000 euros after questioning Carvalho’s ability to control the crowd in his second-round match at Roland Garros. He later apologized, but the penalty stood.

At the Berlin event, Gauff and doubles partner Jessica Pegula opened with a straight-sets win over Anastasia Potapova and Diana Shnaider. Gauff is scheduled to face Paula Badosa in the singles round of 16.
