Colossal develops artificial eggshell to aid moa revival

Colossal Biosciences says it has created an artificial eggshell that could help produce eggs the size of those once laid by New Zealand's extinct moa. Independent experts caution that the development falls far short of enabling the return of the giant birds.

The company, which previously claimed to have resurrected the dire wolf through gene editing, unveiled a lattice structure supporting a transparent silicone membrane. This membrane is said to permit oxygen flow at rates similar to a natural chicken eggshell without needing extra oxygen supply. Moas stood over three metres tall and weighed more than 200 kilograms, with eggs reaching 24 centimetres long and 18 centimetres wide.

A mother-and-daughter duo of citizen scientists has uncovered the largest known coral colony on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, measuring 111 meters across and covering nearly 4,000 square meters. The J-shaped formation of Pavona clavus was found during a dive as part of the Great Reef Census initiative. Advanced 3D modeling confirmed its size, highlighting the role of community involvement in marine conservation.

A 250-million-year-old fossil egg containing a Lystrosaurus embryo has provided the first direct evidence that mammal ancestors laid eggs. Discovered in South Africa, the find resolves a decades-old question about early mammalian reproduction following the End-Permian extinction. Researchers used advanced imaging to reveal the embryo's pre-hatching stage inside a soft-shelled egg.

Taiwanese researchers built a life-size model of an oviraptor nest to investigate how these dinosaurs incubated their eggs. Their experiments indicate a hybrid method involving parental warmth and sunlight, differing from modern birds. This approach explains uneven heating and asynchronous hatching in nests.

On Saturday morning, the eagle owl pair's eggs began hatching at Falun mine in Dalarna. Thousands of enthusiasts have followed the nesting via social media for weeks. The first fluffy chicks appeared in Stora stöten.

Scientists have discovered that specific geometric patterns in oyster reefs boost young oyster survival, offering a blueprint for restoration worldwide. The study, published in Nature, analyzed natural Sydney rock oyster reefs and tested artificial designs in local estuaries. Findings emphasize small protected spaces over complex structures.

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have created a cell-free cartilage scaffold that guides the body to repair damaged bone. The innovation, tested successfully in animal models, avoids strong immune reactions and offers a universal alternative to patient-specific grafts. Plans are underway to test it in human clinical trials.

Australia-based start-up Cortical Labs has announced plans to construct two data centres using neuron-filled chips. The facilities in Melbourne and Singapore will house its CL1 biological computers, which have demonstrated the ability to play video games like Doom. The initiative aims to scale up cloud-based brain-computing services while reducing energy consumption.
