Dangote shifts oil refinery project to Lamu Kenya

Leaders and residents of Lamu County welcomed plans by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote to build an oil refinery in the area instead of Tanzania.

Yesterday President William Ruto handed Deputy President Kithure Kindiki the task of leading a government and private sector team to coordinate preparations for the investment. He said the government has begun preparations and the date for laying the foundation stone has been scheduled.

The refinery will be the largest in East Africa with capacity to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It will supply petroleum products to Kenya and neighboring countries and reduce import costs.

Deputy Governor Dr Mbarak Salim and Lamu Port General Manager Abdulaziz Mzee praised the project. Residents stressed the need for full compensation, 70 percent local youth jobs and community involvement to avoid issues seen in the LAPSSET project.

Billionaire Aliko Dangote has added Lamu to the list of possible locations for a planned oil refinery in East Africa. The project would replicate his 650,000-barrel-a-day facility in Nigeria. Kenya's President William Ruto will make the final decision on the site.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu met Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote on Saturday in Dar es Salaam. The talks followed reports that Dangote now prefers to build a large oil refinery in Kenya instead of Tanzania. Suluhu noted Dangote's ongoing cement investments in the Mtwara region.

Tanzanian MPs heaped praise on Kenya's President William Ruto after his address to their parliament in Dodoma on May 5, 2026, praying for his re-election in 2027. Ruto highlighted regional projects like the Tanga oil refinery, despite a public rebuke from President Samia Suluhu for not consulting first. The two-day state visit aims to strengthen diplomatic and trade ties between Kenya and Tanzania.
