Kenya to begin oil production from Turkana this year

Energy and Petroleum Minister Opiyo Wandayi announced on Friday June 5, 2026 that Kenya will begin producing crude oil from Turkana County before the end of the year.

Minister Wandayi said the crude oil produced will be sold abroad for refining. He said revenues from the sales will benefit every Kenyan. “Before the end of this year we will start producing oil from Turkana,” he said in an interview with Radio Jambo. He noted that project implementation has reached the production stage. Gulf Energy Ltd will extract oil from wells in Lokichar in Turkana South constituency. The company took over project management after acquiring assets of UK-based Tullow Oil.
