Energieminister Opiyo Wandayi gab am Freitag, den 5. Juni 2026, bekannt, dass Kenia noch vor Jahresende mit der Förderung von Rohöl im Bezirk Turkana beginnen wird.

Minister Wandayi erklärte, dass das geförderte Rohöl zur Raffinerie ins Ausland verkauft werden soll. Er betonte, dass die Einnahmen aus den Verkäufen jedem Kenianer zugutekommen werden. „Vor Ende dieses Jahres werden wir mit der Ölförderung in Turkana beginnen“, sagte er in einem Interview mit Radio Jambo. Er merkte an, dass die Projektumsetzung die Förderphase erreicht habe. Gulf Energy Ltd wird das Öl aus den Bohrlöchern in Lokichar im Wahlkreis Turkana South gewinnen. Das Unternehmen übernahm das Projektmanagement, nachdem es die Vermögenswerte des in Großbritannien ansässigen Unternehmens Tullow Oil erworben hatte.
