Uppsala municipality is inviting residents to a democracy day on April 11 at city hall, with a program running from 10am to 3pm. This family-friendly event complements the ongoing Demokratisdagar lecture series in Gottsunda, aiming to demonstrate how local democracy works and how residents can influence Uppsala's community development, according to city director Birgitta Pettersson. She states: “We want to invite you to a day that shows how local democracy functions and how Uppsala as a society develops. How you as a resident can participate in shaping that development.” The program features lectures by researcher and host Emma Frans, guided tours of the city hall's public art (booking required), workshops on local community development and the path to universal suffrage, meetings with politicians, and craft activities for children themed My dream-Uppsala. Topics covered include how Uppsala is governed, ways to influence decisions, engagement opportunities, the roles of politicians versus officials, and the impacts of digitalization and polarization on democratic discourse. The full program and booking links are available on the municipality's website.
