Ex-detective charged after pointing gun at colleague over fish smell

A former South Carolina police detective has been arrested and fired after allegedly pointing his handgun at a fellow officer during a confrontation over food odors in the office microwave.

Michael DeBiase, 46, was charged Tuesday with pointing and presenting a firearm. The incident occurred May 30 at Myrtle Beach Police Department headquarters. According to an arrest warrant, DeBiase confronted a patrol officer about warming up fish in the microwave. He then drew and pointed his department-issued handgun at the officer. The Myrtle Beach Police Department placed DeBiase on administrative leave immediately after the event. It later separated him from employment for violating department policy. DeBiase was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center and released on a $5,000 bond. Prosecutors from the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office are expected to handle the case.
