A firefighter in his 30s has died after falling from a turntable ladder during a drill in Växjö on Sunday evening. Police were called shortly after 5:30 p.m. and the incident is being investigated as a workplace accident.
Police were alerted at 5:28 p.m. to the fire service premises in Växjö after a man in his 30s fell from a height of over three meters from a turntable ladder during a training exercise. He was taken to hospital but could not be saved. His relatives have been notified.
Police spokesperson Patric Fors confirmed that several colleagues were present and are devastated. "At present, it is unclear exactly what happened. We will interview witnesses and conduct a technical examination," he said. There is no suspicion of crime.
Roger Petersson, fire chief at Värends fire service, is affected by the incident. "I don't know exactly what happened. I've just arrived at work and am quite affected. I will listen to my staff, how they are feeling and see what happened," he told Smålandsposten.
The turntable ladder will be seized for examination. The incident is classified as a suspected workplace accident.
