Foreign Ministry cancels hiring of ex-prosecutor's daughter

The Foreign Ministry has canceled the hiring of former Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung's daughter as a researcher following allegations of preferential treatment.

The Foreign Ministry said Friday it canceled the hiring after a recruitment inspection committee found the applicant did not meet the qualifications in the notice. Her daughter applied for a non-civil service researcher post at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy in February last year and passed document screening, a written test and an interview.

The ministry suspended a final decision in April last year amid allegations that her work experience was overstated and documents were accepted after the deadline. It notified her by email on May 29 that the offer was revoked.

The ministry has requested disciplinary action against involved officials and referred the case to the Central Disciplinary Committee. Some opposition lawmakers had raised suspicions of preferential treatment while her father served as top prosecutor.
