Light unveils minimalist flip phone with modern specs

Light announced the Light Flip, a new distraction-free flip phone that combines retro design with updated hardware. The device features a T9 keypad, no touchscreen, and a focus on calls and texts without social media or browsers.

The Brooklyn-based company unveiled the phone on July 21. It runs LightOS with tools like navigation, music, alarms, and notes, plus a 50-megapixel main camera and 12-megapixel selfie camera. The plastic device offers 128GB storage, 6GB RAM, 5G, USB-C, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a removable battery.

Priced at $299, the Light Flip will be sold bundled with a service plan in the US for $39 a month over two years, including unlimited voice and text plus 1GB data. International shipping is set to begin in April 2027.

Founders Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang said the form factor responds to demand from younger users seeking even simpler devices than the Light Phone III. An open-source SDK for third-party tools is expected this fall.
