MachineGames developing Wolfenstein 3, multiple reports confirm

Reports from Windows Central, Kotaku, GameSpot, and others indicate Swedish studio MachineGames is in early development on Wolfenstein 3, the next mainline entry after 2017's Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. The project follows the acclaimed alternate-history Nazi-fighting series and the studio's recent Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

MachineGames, known for rebooting the Wolfenstein franchise with intense first-person shooters blending action and anti-fascist narratives, is reportedly working on Wolfenstein 3. Sources including Windows Central, Kotaku, and GameSpot confirm the project, which would be the first mainline sequel since The New Colossus. The studio's last release was Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in 2024, after the mixed-reception co-op spin-off Wolfenstein: Youngblood in 2019.

The modern series began with Wolfenstein: The New Order in 2014, set in a world where Nazis won WWII, featuring protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz leading resistance efforts. Prequel The Old Blood arrived in 2015, and The New Colossus shifted to a Nazi-occupied America, earning praise for its bold storytelling—including fictionalized historical figures like Jimi Hendrix and Nikola Tesla—amid real-world political tensions.

The 2017 launch drew controversy for its unapologetic anti-Nazi stance. Bethesda's then-PR director Pete Hines defended it in a Vice News interview: “Unless you’re a Nazi, there should be nobody who’s opposed to the idea of being against Nazis... Maybe a little bit [of controversy], but the hornet’s nest is full of Nazis so…fuck those guys. I’ll poke a Nazi hornet’s nest.”

In a September 2025 Noclip documentary, MachineGames creative director Axel Torvenius reaffirmed commitment to the saga: "We have always seen this as a [Wolfenstein] trilogy... I hope we're not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell."

The franchise traces back to 1981's Castle Wolfenstein and 1992's seminal Wolfenstein 3D by id Software. No official details on Wolfenstein 3's plot, platforms, or release, but speculation points to a potential Xbox showcase reveal in summer 2026. It may tie into a Prime Video live-action series in early development, while MachineGames is also said to be pursuing a multiplayer project. Bethesda has not commented.
