NBA scouts identify key depth weakness for Lakers

NBA scouts have pointed out the Los Angeles Lakers' lack of depth as a potential barrier to championship success in the 2025-26 season. Despite strong performances from stars LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves, the team struggles with rim protection. The Lakers remain second in the Western Conference behind undefeated Oklahoma City.

The Los Angeles Lakers have started the 2025-26 season on a high note, particularly since LeBron James returned from injury. James made his season debut on November 18 against the Utah Jazz, and the Lakers have not lost a game with him in the lineup. In his three games back, James is averaging nearly 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game.

The team's star trio has been dominant. Luka Doncic is averaging over 35 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game, positioning him as an early MVP candidate. Austin Reaves is enjoying his best season yet, posting 27.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7 assists per game on average. This top-end talent has helped the Lakers secure a second-place spot in the Western Conference, trailing only Oklahoma City, which has lost just one game so far.

However, scouts see vulnerabilities. The Lakers allow 69% shooting inside of 5 feet, ranking fourth-worst in the NBA for paint protection. An Eastern Conference scout told ESPN's Tim Bontemps, "Are they up there with Oklahoma City, Denver and Houston? No. But they're clearly in the top six. Their depth overall isn't good, but their top-line talent makes them a team I wouldn't want to see in the playoffs."

A Western Conference scout offered a more positive view: "They're top three for sure. When you have Luka, you're always going to be in the mix."

Nearly seven months after their first-round playoff exit last season, the Lakers show contention signs for their 18th title, but depth remains a concern as the season progresses.
