Rama Duwaji, wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, traveled to Mallorca, Spain, for a luxury Islamic spiritual retreat as the United States marked its 250th anniversary over the Fourth of July weekend.
Duwaji departed from Newark Liberty International Airport earlier this week to serve as artist-in-residence at the sold-out Women’s Sanctuary retreat. The program, which costs about $3,400 per guest, focuses on “Plants of the Quran” through art, botanical workshops, and Islamic reflection.
She is also scheduled to host a second retreat in Corsica later this month on the theme “Mary in the Quran.” The Mayor’s Office confirmed that Duwaji was not accompanied by her usual NYPD security detail during the trip.
Mamdani marked the anniversary with a speech at New York City Hall in which he criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies and economic inequality. He later took part in official events including the Parade of Sail and a lighting ceremony at the Empire State Building.
Republican City Councilwoman Joann Ariola and Councilman Frank Morano questioned the decision to be overseas during the national milestone.
