Nigerian national charged over Ksh 10 million heroin in Mombasa

A 35-year-old Nigerian national has been charged in a Mombasa court with trafficking heroin worth nearly Ksh 10 million. The offence allegedly occurred on April 15, 2026, in the Kadzandani area of Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa County, involving 3,265 grams of the drug valued at Ksh 9,795,000. He also faces charges for being in Kenya without valid documents.

Okwara, a Nigerian citizen, appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Gladys Ollimo on charges of trafficking narcotic drugs contrary to the laws on narcotic and psychotropic substances.

The prosecution stated that on April 15, 2026, he was found in possession of 3,265 grams of heroin with a street value of Ksh 9,795,000 in the Kadzandani area of Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa County. He faces a second count of being unlawfully present in Kenya without a valid passport or permit.

Okwara pleaded not guilty to both charges. The Director of Public Prosecutions opposed bond, citing him as a high flight risk due to the severity of the charges and his lack of fixed residence or legal immigration status.

The court is set to rule on the bond application on Wednesday, April 22.
